Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Glabrous perennial herbs.

Stems: Stems prostrate or floating, rooting at the nodes, 1–5 dm long.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades broadly elliptic to subovate, 0.7–4.5 cm long, 0.4–2.3 cm wide. floating leaves usually larger. Margins entire. Petioles 0.3–1.2 cm long. Stipules present, often caducous.

Flowers: Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, (3)4–5(6)-merous, in the upper leaf axils; Floral tube not prolonged beyond ovary. Calyx of 4 sepals, 1.4–2 mm long. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 4. Pollen shed in tetrads. Ovary inferior, as many cells and carpels as sepals; ovules anatropous; style 1; stigma capitate or hemispherical, entire, surrounded by anthers at anthesis.

Fruit: Capsules elongate–globose; (2–)2.5–5 mm long; irregularly dehiscent. Seeds in several indistinct rows per cell; distinct; elongate–ovoid; 0.6–0.9 mm long.

Ploidy: 2n = 16*

Habitat: Streambeds; disturbed areas in wet forest; and at low elevations in wet; cultivated land such as taro paddies.

Elevation Range: 30–1,220 m.
